DACA for Progress.

Someone help Lady Liberty update her resume because if conservatives have it their way, she will no longer be welcoming the tired, poor, or huddled masses. (Also, um, rude? Kind of a backhanded way to welcome someone to a country — like jeez, are we not allowed to have jet lag?)

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is an essential immigration program that has been under attack by Republicans and conservative judges. Just last week, a federal judge in Texas ruled that President Obama overstepped his constitutional powers when creating DACA and deemed the program illegal. The decision could send DACA back to the Supreme Court, threatening the future of thousands of DACA recipients.

However, a new survey shows that the trend of disagreeing with conservative judges is continuing into the fall season. Data for Progress finds ([link removed]) that 56% of voters support continuing the DACA program, including 80% of Democrats and 59% of Independents.

With DACA on the line thanks to always punchable conservatives, Data for Progress also finds that a majority of voters (61%) would support lawmakers in Congress passing a bill to ensure DACA recipients have the opportunity to gain U.S. citizenship. This includes 79% of Democrats and 64% of Independents.

Many DACA recipients spent the majority of their lives in the United States. For many of them, it’s all they know. It’s where they went to school, made friends, and created memories. So, to anti-DACA conservatives, just because your family came over on the Mayflower 400 years earlier doesn't mean you have more claim to citizenship than a DACA recipient. Quite frankly, you’re just lucky that your ancestors didn’t die of scurvy.

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:

That’s not what Rome is about! We should totally just stab Caesar!

If you've been on the internet lately, you may have come across the bizarre revelation that men spend a lot of their time on Earth thinking about the Roman Empire. For some men, it's once a month. For others, it's daily. Either way, it's probably too much time spent on something that ultimately failed.

In a very serious exclusive, Data for Progress finds ([link removed]) 47% of male voters think about the Roman Empire at least a few times a year, while only 30% of female voters do the same. To be fair, if we were asking female voters about Princess Diana, the Titanic, or whether or not B.J. Novak is the father of Mindy Kaling’s children, we probably would have gotten a very different answer.

Yet still, we have to ask – men, what’s the appeal of the Roman Empire? Is it the togas? Is it Caesar? Is it the Roman baths? (It’s the baths, right? It’s okay, we get it.) Whatever it is, from the women at Data for Progress, we say to the men in our lives who think about the Roman Empire: et tu, Brute?

Who run the world? Big Tech! (jk, it’s still girls.)

It pains us to say this, but it’s virtually impossible to go an entire day without using Google, Amazon, or Meta. Sorry, but if we need to figure out how Chris Pratt (the worst Hollywood Chris) is related to the Kennedys, what are we going to do… Not google it? And c’mon, are we really not going to do a deep stalk of someone on Insta or Facebook before a first date? We need to know all about your Aunt Susan’s cat’s birthday party! For safety reasons!

Still, the monopoly that Big Tech companies like Google and Amazon have over the market puts small businesses at a disadvantage. We probably COULD go to a local store to buy our Oktoberfest fit, and we should!! Data for Progress finds ([link removed]) 60% of voters believe Big Tech companies have too much power over the market, including 65% of Democrats, 63% of Independents, and 53% of Republicans.

Big Tech has truly infiltrated our lives, but hey, at least we’re trying to use some self-control! We’re proud of everyone out there who’s actually abiding by their Instagram time-limit, and if we’re going to self-regulate, it’s about time that the government does the same. We find that nearly half (46%) of voters believe government officials should do more to regulate Big Tech companies. Thirty percent said they are doing the right amount of regulation and only 14% said they should do so less.

So, government, we are once again asking you to step up and impose good ol’ fashioned regulation on Big Tech. If not for us, do it to humble Bezos and Zuck. That would be pretty funny, don’t you think?
