Last Friday, we hosted our first town hall in Richmond at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. We were joined by my colleagues in the General Assembly and Del. Dawn Adams, as well as Richmond City Council members Andreas Addison, Dr. Michael Jones, and Stephanie Lynch.

Friends,

As the General Assembly winds down, our work as Senators turns to finalizing legislation before bills get sent to the Governor.

The Senate and House of Delegates must come together and reconcile the bills each chamber passed. It’s a lot of hard work, long hours, and waiting.

While we were waiting for bills from the House of Delegates this past Wednesday night, I had a little bit of fun on Twitter with some of my favorite poets.

Edgar Allan Poe:

Once upon a midnight dreary, while we pondered, weak & weary, Over many a quaint stack of bills. While we nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping. As of someone gently rapping at the senate chamber door. “‘Tis some Delegate,” we muttered, “Only this & nothing more.”

Round & round the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning, soon again I heard a rapping, even louder than before! “Surely,” I said, “those are Delegates at our Chamber door. Surely, they have brought stacks and stacks of bills to explore.” But ‘twas the wind & nothing more

William Carlos Williams:

so much depends upon the House sending back Bills with amendments that we can pass without conference

T.S. Eliot:

Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherized upon a table; Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets, The muttering retreats In this Chamber and mill With some hollow-eyed Delegates and read their Bills

Julius Caesar, William Shakepeare:

Friends, Virginians, countrymen, lend me your ears; I came to read Bills, not to sit around waiting for them. The nonsense that some men utter lives after them; Their well-thought efforts are oft buried amid piles of paper. So let it be within these Chambers.

Hamlet, William Shakespeare:

Good night, sweet ladies, good night. 1:14 am and we are adjourned.

In all seriousness, I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished during the 2020 General Assembly. The efforts of both the Senate and the House of Delegates, our staff, and employees of the capitol all serve one purpose: to serve Virginians and improve the lives of the residents of the Commonwealth.

In next week’s newsletter, we will be able to share updates about our bills that have gone forward to the Governor’s desk.

Thank you for being a part of this work with me.
