Meet the 2023 American Courage Award Recipient
|

The Honorable Julie A. Su
|
|
Julie Su was appointed by President Biden as the Deputy Secretary of Labor in July 2021, and currently serves as Acting Secretary of Labor. Before her federal role, Su served as the Secretary for the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, focusing on enforcing workplace laws, combating wage theft, and building equitable pathways to good jobs for all workers. During her tenure as California Labor Commissioner, Su revitalized labor law enforcement and launched a groundbreaking campaign against wage theft to protect vulnerable workers.
Su is a nationally recognized expert in workers' and civil rights and received a MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant. She's known for her multi-strategy approach and has received numerous accolades for her legal career, including teaching positions at UCLA and Northeastern Law School. She is a graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School and is fluent in Mandarin and Spanish. Su is recognized for her decades-long work of fighting for the rights of immigrants, Asian Americans, people of color, women, and other vulnerable workers to build an economy and society with equity, inclusion, and justice for all.
