Update: Our Fight for Student Debt Cancellation

Dear Neighbor,

I wanted to provide an update on where we stand in the fight for student debt cancellation and resources you can access in the meantime.

This summer, in a cruel decision, the Supreme Court struck down President Biden’s life-changing plan to cancel up to $20,000 in student loan debt for over 40 million people.

I vehemently disagreed with that decision – but that doesn’t mean the fight is over. President Biden announced that he will pursue an alternative authority to provide broad student debt cancellation for millions of borrowers. Rest assured, I am fighting hard for this essential relief, and I will keep pressing to make sure it is delivered as swiftly as possible.

Payments Resume October 1st with a 12-Month On-Ramp Period

Due to the harmful debt ceiling legislation passed by conservatives in June, student loan payments will resume on October 1, 2023. Please note that there is a temporary on-ramp period through Sept. 30, 2024, which protects borrowers from having a missed payment or delinquency reported to credit reporting agencies.

Resources for Relief

We are only days away from student loan payments resuming on October 1st, and many borrowers are understandably in a financial panic. As House Democrats continue fighting for bold student debt cancellation that meets the scale of the crisis, I want to share some tools that are available now to provide student debt relief.

Information on each of these resources is available on the Department of Education website: StudentAid.gov
