Dear John,

This week the House Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education held a hearing on the CCP's influence in our classrooms, and the testimony we heard was deeply concerning. I met with Orange County educators in D.C., and the results from my latest constituent survey send a clear message to progressives in Sacramento and D.C.

Don't forget, today is the last day to sign up for my 2023 Passport Fair!

Get the details about all of this and more below, and make sure to follow my FacebookInstagram, and X to get these updates in real-time.

Fighting CCP Influence in Classrooms

WATCH: Confucius Institutes are the CCP in Our Classrooms

This week, the House Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education held a hearing on the the CCP's Influence in K-12 Education. Experts discussed the extent to which the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is present in American schools through the use of Confucius classrooms.

These programs are an attempt to infiltrate our education system with CCP propaganda. We cannot allow foreign governments who oppose freedom and democracy to influence our youth.

During the hearing, I submitted for the record a unanimous resolution from the Orange County Board of Education condemning Confucius Classrooms, and expressing support for my bill to prevent efforts to propagandize students at our institutions of higher learning.

As you may know, new and renewed passport requests are facing major delays. The State Department reports that even expedited passport requests can take anywhere from seven to nine weeks as they face a current backlog of millions of requests.

My office is partnering with the Placentia Library District and the Department of State to offer non-emergency passport processing appointments in Placentia TOMMORROW, September 23, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 3:45 PM.

It was great to see Los Alamitos Unified School District Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, Elvia Galicia.

We had a productive conversation about the importance of federal impact aid and how we can ensure our students have everything they need to achieve future success.

You Should Be Free to Choose

Governor Newsom has announced an executive ban on all new internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035. According to the World Energy Council, 95% of transportation relies on gas powered vehicles, and electric vehicles are far too expensive for most Americans. With prices for everything going through the roof, Americans should not be punished for simply trying to get to school and work.

I wanted to hear directly from my constituents on this issue, so my office conducted a poll last week, and the results were crystal clear: 73% of you oppose Gov. Newsom's gas car ban. Fortunately, I can report that the house passed the Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchasing Act, which will prevent Gov. Newsom from enacting policies to impact your choice of car in California and will prevent the federal government from enacting similar restrictions nationwide

WATCH: Rep. Steel Participates in Hearing on Reduced Patient Access

I have heard from physicians across California, particularly in emergency medicine, that issues with the implementation of the No Surprises Act have caused such financial instability that many physicians are retiring early and leaving medicine. At this week's Ways and Means hearing on Reduced Care for Patients, I asked witnesses how we can remedy this problem.
