Oldham Council Leader meets with Eton Headmaster

Last week, Simon Henderson, the Headmaster of Eton College, visited Oldham. He met with Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, to discuss plans for a new college for young people aged 16 to 18. The government approved these plans last month.

The new institution will be called Eton Star Oldham. It’s a joint project between Eton College and Star Academies. The goal is to offer better educational opportunities to Oldham's youth, particularly those who've had fewer chances. The college aims to admit 240 students each year. Students will study a range of subjects and also participate in additional activities similar to those at Eton.

The college will also host talks from guest speakers and offer focused teaching sessions. These are designed to prepare students for entry into top universities. This new college is significant for Oldham, combining the strengths of Eton and Star Academies. It's an opportunity for local young people to aim higher in their educational goals.

Town Centre made safer, cleaner and greener

New bollards have been put in place to stop vehicles driving through a pedestrianised area of Oldham town centre.

The bollards have been installed at the entrances to Albion Street and Henshaw Street to stop unauthorised drivers from using the High Street.

Although the area is a car-free zone, some drivers have been using High Street, and stopping the area from being a safe place for those on foot or bike.

From now on unauthorised vehicles won’t be able to get access to the town centre unless it’s an essential trip or emergency.

The bollards will be active seven days a week and will only be lowered for authorised vehicles, such as those making deliveries or responding to emergencies.

This measure is another step in Oldham Council’s Accessible Oldham scheme, a series of improvements to make it easier, safer and more enjoyable to travel around Oldham.

Oldham Hospital new hub site

The Royal Oldham’s £28 million extension to the main hospital will be open to patients by the end of the year.

The new development is part of the Greater Manchester Improving Specialist Care programme and will enable the hospital to operate as a hub site for high-risk and emergency general and colorectal surgery. It will primarily serve Oldham and the surrounding areas giving patients more choice and quicker access to the the care that they need.

The site has been named The Hulton Building, in honour of a former consultant, the late Mr Neil Hulton, and will house additional ward space for general and specialist colorectal surgery patients.

As part of the investment, a newly refurbished state-of-the-art theatre for emergency and colorectal surgery is in progress at the hospital.

The building also includes spacious patient day rooms and therapy spaces that overlook a courtyard giving natural light.  It has been designed with the involvement of patients, clinicians, and support staff to ensure that every detail is captured with the service user in mind.

Local animal lover becomes zoo keeper for the day

Stephen Exton, a lifelong animal enthusiast from Oldham, is getting the chance to live his dream as a zookeeper, all thanks to Mayor Cllr Zahid Chauhan's Truly Wished project. He was awarded a 'Keeper for the Day' experience at Blackpool Zoo. Stephen, who resides in Lees with his wife Michaela, has harboured this dream since he was 14 years old.

He's also been a pillar of the community, dedicating 40 years as a leader for local Cubs, Scouts, and Beavers.

At a local gathering at St Edwards Church, the Mayor celebrated Stephen, and he received hearty applause from attending families.

Besides being a District Nurse, Stephen will now assist zoo staff in looking after animals like monkeys, penguins, and tigers. He'll also be in charge of preparing and distributing special treats for these animals. It's a heartwarming fulfilment of a lifelong dream for someone who has given so much to the Oldham community.

Roadworks in the town centre

To better improve active travel in the town centre, we are carrying out works on West Street and Cheapside – the works will last a total of 12 months.

The improvements will include the construction of a new cycleway into the town centre, updated footways and sustainability features including rain gardens and tree planting.

On Monday 25 September, the link between the Cheapside and West Street bus stations at Oldham will be closed for approximately six months for improvement works.

Services that normally use West Street to access Cheapside, will now have to divert via Rochdale Road, St Mary's Way into Cheapside Bus Station. The no-left turn at Cheapside bus station is to be taken away to facilitate bus movements. For some services, the stands may have changed.

Please view the diversions guide on the [TFGM website]([link removed]).
