The British scientist behind the first cloning of a mammal using adult cells died this month, leaving behind a twofold legacy, writes Hastings Center senior research scholar Gregory E. Pelvic Exams Without Consent; Latest Animal-Human Transplant Hastings in the Media
NBC TV Nightly News featured a Hastings Center Report study estimating that more than 3.5 million patients in the U.S. may have been given pelvic exams without consent, often while sedated for surgery. Doctors interviewed by NBC called the practice a “violation of medical ethics” and of “patient autonomy.” Watch the NBC segment.
The Associated Press asked Hastings Center senior research scholar Karen Maschke to comment on a recent landmark experiment in which a genetically modified pig kidney worked for a record two months in the body of a deceased donor. Maschke pointed out the limitations of this experiment but noted that it provides valuable information about a certain type of genetically modified pig kidney that might be used in a human recipient. She is leading a project to develop ethics and policy recommendations for clinical trials with pig kidneys. Read the AP article.
