*LANSING, MICH*. Emergencies can happen when we least expect them. That?s why the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is encouraging Michigan residents to take steps to prepare for emergencies during National Preparedness Month.

Throughout September, the MSP/EMHSD is joining federal, state, and local governments to support emergency preparedness initiatives. Agencies nationwide are uniting under the theme ?*Take Control in 1, 2, 3.*? ?The campaign focuses on preparing older adults for disasters by assessing needs, making a plan, and engaging a support network.

?Older adults can face greater risks when it comes to extreme weather events and emergencies,? said Capt. Kevin Sweeney, state deputy director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and commander of the MSP/EMHSD. ?It?s important we all assist our elderly family members and neighbors and help them be prepared. We encourage everyone to create an emergency preparedness kit with food, water, and first-aid supplies.?
