Now’s the time to Live Like Maggy   A fighting legacy, sustained by you! —————————— Florida has a knack for disguising bad bills behind benign names. The “Live Local Act,” signed into law by Governor DeSantis on March 29, is just the latest shameful example. The measure provides $711 million in funding and tax incentives for “affordable” housing projects while removing regulatory hurdles. Worse, it strips the rights of local communities to decide where new housing is built, and ramrods inappropriate or environmentally damaging development into areas that may not be able to handle the inundation. The new law is exactly the kind of shady sleight-of-hand governing that would've spurred the late environmental champion Maggy Hurchalla to action. Maggy wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is. Her sharp comprehension and direct approach made her a formidable environmental ally. Her ferocious devotion to protecting wetlands and waterways inspired so many of us during her lifetime, and persists now in her memory. Defending Florida’s last remaining green spaces against sprawling development is a vision we collaborated on and shared with Maggy, and remain committed to at Friends of the Everglades. That’s why we were inspired to launch the Maggy Hurchalla Opportunity Fund in September 2022 to advance Maggy’s life work, which focused on ensuring sensible growth policies prevail, protecting the Everglades, and safeguarding clean water for all Floridians. Natural lands and waterscapes across Florida are facing a whole new set of threats today. For decades, Maggy led the charge, carving an inspired path in an effort to protect them. Where she left off, we aim to carry the torch forward with the help of supporters who believe as strongly as we do that these places are worth saving. Together we stand as a last line of defense. In honor of one environmental hero and a shared commitment to conserve wild spaces, we invite you to support Maggy’s Fund by making an online contribution to advance this important work Support Maggy's Fund   P.S.
