Dear MoveOn member,
My name is Cheryl Zando. I am the chief operating officer for MoveOn. I don't write to members often, but I am writing to you today with an urgent request.
2023 has been a frightening year, with the startling rise in GOP-led book bans, repeated efforts to ban abortion, and the return of Donald Trump as the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for president.
And while the GOP has been raking in cash from their billionaire donors, donations to MoveOn—and across the progressive movement—have taken a sharp decline.1 And independent experts believe that 2024 will be the most expensive political season of all time, topping $10 billion in spending.2
That's why I'm writing to you today. As MoveOn's COO, I'm responsible for making decisions about our yearly budget and how much money we can dedicate to our campaign work. Over the next few weeks, I will have to make decisions about our 2024 budget, which will determine how big our 2024 election campaign can be.
Given the GOP's continued march into fascism, it is more important than ever that we have the resources to make our election work as big and impactful as possible.
Which is why I am making a personal request: Will you chip in $5 a month to help close MoveOn's budget gap, reach our goal of raising $1 million in new donations by midnight on September 30, and keep MoveOn strong for the long-term? Your ongoing support is critical to keeping MoveOn strong for the long-term.
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
While $1 million may sound like a huge number, know that with millions of members like you, we can easily make our goal. Especially if you, John, give today.
But if we don't, our bigger goals—stopping Trump in 2024, reversing book bans across the country, protecting the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, and so much more—will be in jeopardy.
MoveOn has been preparing for 2024 for months, and we have big plans to win up and down the ballot that I don't want to pull back on. Here is just some of what we have planned:
I don't want to cut back on any of these plans, and I am very hopeful that you will help. I know you understand the importance of this work. Every day, I feel your love and appreciation from every corner of the country.
But, today, we don't just need your love and appreciation, we need your financial support as well.
John, will you please start a $5 monthly donation, so we can close our fundraising gap and enable MoveOn to continue working full steam ahead? So many in America depend on us, and your ongoing financial support keeps that work alive.
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
Thanks for all you do.
–Cheryl

Want to support MoveOn's work? Book bans have skyrocketed thanks to right-wing state laws which have forced teachers to remove books from their classrooms. In response, MoveOn is launching a "Banned Bookmobile," filling it with books that the far right has banned, and driving it around to hand out those books, for free, in highly trafficked areas that will attract media attention. To keep the Banned Bookmobile up and running into 2024, we need your help.
Will you start a monthly gift to power our critical work?
