A very busy couple of weeks
Dear John,
A big couple of weeks on the campaign trail, with the TVNZ Leaders' Debate on Tuesday night dominating the week. What did you think of Christopher Luxon's performance? I thought he did an excellent job and showed what a good Prime Minister he will be. Most - if not all - commentators seem to think he won the debate. There's more coming up, including on Wednesday night (Newshub).
Here in the Hutt, I'm campaigning hard locally and each night this week has been spent at Meet the Candidates events - first Maungaraki (at the same time as the Leaders' Debate!), an ethnic communities event on Wednesday, and then Petone/Eastbourne last night. As always, a diverse range of questions and I've enjoyed the opportunity to spell out my track record, my work around the community and the things I want to achieve for the Hutt in the future. TVNZ's Q and A programme covered the Hutt South race here ([link removed]) and we got a mention in this TVNZ wrap of Wellington seats too. ([link removed])
Christopher Luxon visited the Hutt last week and we did some "human hoardings" on the Petone Esplanade (thank you to everyone who tooted or waved!), stopped in at The Neighbourhood Cafe for a "Lux" hot chocolate, and visited Mexicano corn chips in Taita (who make the corn chips you find on Air NZ flights). Emma Chatterton came along too - she's doing a great job up against the PM in Remutaka. The Dom Post profiled her and some other candidates here - check it out. ([link removed])
How you can help: If you're keen to help out on in the final couple of weeks of the election campaign, then I'd love your assistance. I've been humbled by the number of people offering help - from hosting signs, delivering letters and leaflets, and heaps more. If you'd like to help out in any way, please let me know. ([link removed]) There's lots to do and there's lots of ways to be involved, ranging from easy to hard, and from a minimal to an extensive time commitment.
Misinformation: It's a bit sad but Labour's campaign so far has largely consisted of negative attacks on National and just making things up about our policy. This week I launched a website, "Get Back on Facts" ([link removed]) which aims to counter this incorrect information. Check it out here and make sure you share it. We also launched a counter-video to one of Labour's ads. Check it out here. ([link removed]) This week we've launched policies to revive international education ([link removed]) , cut red rape ([link removed]) and there's more to come!
Around the Hutt: The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of meet the candidates meetings, door-knocking, handing out leaflets, human hoardings, visits to schools, and much more. One issue I've been working on for a while that I'm very proud of is a proper pedestrian crossing for Kelson School! For years the Council claimed there was no need for one, but they've finally seen sense and they've approved one for Major Drive. Great news!
Have a great Friday and weekend.
Chris
P.S This video ([link removed]) of Jeremy has gone viral on Facebook - did you see it? ([link removed])
Human Hoardings in Petone
Emma, Christopher and me in Petone last Tuesday morning!
"Lux" Hot Chocolate
Real pleasure to take Chris Luxon to The Neighbourhood cafe in Lower Hutt on Tuesday alongside Emma Chatterton. Colin (who is 83) opened it a couple of months ago - with all profits going to the Lower Hutt foodbank. During the Hutt Hot Choc Challenge in July they had an amazing hot chocolate called "The Lux" - so of course I had to take the boss to try it for himself!
Janmashtami Celebrations
On Thursday night it was my great honour to attend the Janmashtami (appearance day of Lord Krishna) celebrations at the Indian Hall in Petone, organised by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Thank you for the invitation and warm welcome. I enjoyed celebrating this wonderful day with you.
Visit to Mexicano
Did you know that Mexicano corn chips are made in Lower Hutt? Took the boss there on Tuesday with Emma Chatterton. A fascinating visit. We tried our hand at packing the boxes - not sure I should give up politics just yet... Thanks David and team for the tour.
Waiwhetu Stream
For the last few years I’ve been volunteering most months cleaning up the Waiwhetu Stream. On Sunday there was a lovely afternoon tea to celebrate all of the volunteers who give their time helping out with cleaning and planting. Thanks to Deputy Mayor Tui Lewis for the certificate of appreciation.
A sea of blue!
That moment when the house you grew up in has a Bishop sign 🙂
Some good news for Kelson Residents
Great news for Kelson! Finally this growing suburb will be getting a proper pedestrian crossing on Major Drive by the school. Been fighting for this alongside the community for years. This has been signed off by the Traffic subcommittee of Council.
101 Parkruns!
First Parkrun in the black - not red - shirt!
Would you look at that
Someone found a Bishop/Chatterton sign up on Mt Ruapehu!
Visit to Gurudwara Sahib
I joined Nicola Willis, Scott Sheeran, Frances Hughes, Karuna Muthu and Emma Chatterton in visiting the Gurudwara Sahib in Naenae. As always, a very warm welcome and we enjoyed the langar lunch.
Goody Goodness
Have you checked out Goody Goodness on Jackson St yet? They’ve relocated from High St. Artisan products from all over including some wonderful Hutt products. Check them out.
Boulcott FM
The Boulcott School production, ‘Boulcott FM’ was amazing last week! Entirely put together by the students, it featured music from decades gone by - the 1950s to the present day. Well done to all involved.
