North
Allegheny Business Roundtable
On September
7th, I joined
Rep. Arvind Venkat, the
North Allegheny School District, and
North Hills Community Outreach for a NA Business Roundtable. These
gatherings foster meaningful conversations with local business
stakeholders and provide valuable updates on the School District, as
well as insights into their budget for the upcoming year. I also had
the opportunity to meet NA’s new superintendent, Dr. Brendan
Hyland.

Legislative Update
Basic Education Funding
Commission
Last week, the Basic Education
Funding Commission began holding hearings. We heard from Dr. Matthew
Kelly, an Assistant Professor at Penn State University, who laid out
updated adequacy targets for each of our Pennsylvania school
districts. These adequacy targets represent an important first step in
determining what each district would need to spend to ensure that
students who walk through their doors receive a comprehensive,
effective, and contemporary education. The targets take into account
many factors that students require to succeed in school and then make
adjustments based on individual districts and student needs.
We also heard from administrators, school counselors, and students
from some of the most underfunded schools in Pennsylvania, and about
the struggles that they face every day. Administrators talked about
having to make devastating choices like whether to repair a roof to
keep a building safe or to keep a teacher so that more students could
learn. Counselors talked about the ongoing levels of stress and trauma
that our students and educators face every single day. And students
talked about how hard it is to motivate yourself to learn when
you’re surrounded by a physical infrastructure that is unsafe
and crumbling around you.
Their testimony has been
heartbreaking, and difficult to hear at times. But I’m
incredibly grateful to everyone who has come forward to tell their
stories so far, and I look forward to the upcoming hearings. You can
watch previous hearings, view written testimony, and watch hearings
live on my website at SenatorLindseyWilliams.com/BEFC.
Every single one of Pennsylvania’s students can learn and be
successful– but that cannot happen without equitable and
adequate financial support. It’s time that we give our students
what they need to succeed.

Upcoming PHEAA and PA Forward Student
Loan Program Webinar Events
Representatives
from the Pennsylvania
Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) will be hosting
webinars over the coming months on a variety of financial aid related
topics, including an overview of how to apply for all types of
financial aid, reviewing financial aid offers, financial aid for
non-traditional students, and more! The next two webinars are outlined
below:
- Financial Aid Timeline - Know What to Do
When
Thursday, September 27, 2023m 6:30-7:30 PM (ET)
Follow Linda Pacewicz and Dan Wray of PHEAA as they guide
you along the exciting (and sometimes bumpy) road to an affordable
higher education. The journey will begin before high school and end in
the land of education loan repayment—or maybe even education
loan forgiveness. One thing is for certain: it’s never too early
to start preparing for a successful higher education experience. This
1-hour presentation will provide the starting points and web resources
for effective research before, during, and after your student makes
postsecondary decisions. Knowing what to expect, and planning for it,
is the key.
- Searching for Scholarships and
Affording the Balance
Thursday, September 28, 2023,
6:30-7:30 PM (ET)
There are many ways to pay for
education; one important step is to search and apply for scholarships.
More free money equals less borrowing. Join Linda Pacewicz and Daniel
Wray from PHEAA for a 1-hour presentation to review the available
scholarship options and tips on applying. We’ll then review what
to do about possible remaining balances to make affordable higher
education decisions.
For more upcoming webinars, to register,
or to catch videos of previous presentations, go to Financial
Aid Webinars (pheaa.org).
