A free, financially independent, and sustainable news industry is essential to thriving democracies. However, the power imbalance between Big Tech corporations and individual journalists and publishers has left the news industry at the mercy of colossal platforms that control everything from publishing to audience to digital advertising, and now, the next generation of AI.

Worse, Facebook, Google and other giants have unleashed an unprecedented direct attack on public efforts in democracies around the world that seek to pass new laws to address these imbalances of power. This includes Meta preventing Canadians from reaching news publishers and threatening to do the same thing in California, and Google saying it is ready to do the same. These actions are a direct threat to our democracy and public safety.

Senator Amy Klobuchar, who has led efforts in Congress to protect America’s free press, will discuss these threats to the free press and the fundamental rights of every American. Sen. Klobuchar, who has demonstrated a unique ability to foster bipartisan cooperation, will also share insights on both legislative and regulatory measures to address these threats.

“Protecting News to Preserve Democracy” will be the first major public discussion in Washington of this latest stage in the fight to protect our democracies from the unaccountable power and actions of these private corporations. In addition to Sen. Klobuchar, the event will also feature leading policymakers, journalists, media industry experts, and free speech advocates in a candid and robust discussion about crucial first steps to support local news in North America. This will include updates on the status of the U.S. Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA), California’s online news bill AB 886, Canada’s Online News Bill C-18.

Please join us in person at 600 14th St NW or online on September 27th for this important event.
