# [#]John,
This is a longer email, but it’s important to explain what we’ve built and to update you on our race.
I am running because of my commitment to working people and protecting our environment, our democracy, and our fundamental rights.
Oregon’s 5th congressional district (OR-5) is key to doing this work and helping Democrats win back the House.
Bottom line: Given the foundation we’ve built and adjustments made, I am the best-positioned Democrat to win both the OR-5 primary and the general election in 2024.
It starts with the foundation we’ve built. There’s an urban-rural divide in Oregon that often defines our political leadership. In 2018, we began to change that in Central Oregon. In a deeply red district, I challenged a 20-year, Republican incumbent. The political infrastructure we built resulted in the largest voter swing of any congressional race in the country. I became the first Democrat in 48 years to win Deschutes County in a House race. The incumbent retired the next cycle.
We continued to turn red areas purple and some purple areas blue. In 2019, I was elected to the Jefferson County Education Service District Board in rural Central Oregon and appointed to the statewide Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board.
When OR-5 was dramatically redrawn in 2021, it incorporated primarily red and red-leaning counties, including Central Oregon, changing it from a leaning-Democrat to a tossup district.
That means OR-5 is one of the most competitive districts in the entire country, and I am the only Democrat in 50 years to win one of the biggest counties in the district.
Let’s face it: 2022 was a tough year for Oregon Democrats. Republican turnout was 10% higher than usual. Our Governor received 42% of the vote in OR-5, and we secured 49%. We won in the blue and purple areas, despite National Republicans spending over $8 million attacking me.
We overperformed because people like you, John, stood with me and helped us build the grassroots infrastructure needed for Democrats to win in places like Oregon’s 5th district. Last year, we fell a couple thousand votes short. Well, we found those votes and we will win in 2024.
Next year will be different. We learned a lot and made adjustments. We still have a strong base throughout OR-5 and our team is stronger, our message is clearer, our fundraising is more robust, and we are ready for whatever attacks come our way.
Lori Chavez-DeRemer cannot hide from her MAGA votes. Defeating her will take a deep understanding of rural and urban issues and a track record of bringing Oregonians together to solve our problems. I’m the only candidate with on-the-ground experience in housing, education, infrastructure, water, natural resources, wildfires, and dealing with how climate change is impacting Oregon.
An early poll by one of the most respected polling firms in the country shows we have more than a 40% lead in the Democratic primary.
We’ve built the foundation. Now, John, I need you with me to finish the job and give OR-5 the experienced leader it deserves.
