Farmers in DRC have learned how to stabilize the topsoil, improve soil
fertility, and increase the amount of farmable land.


The fertile valleys of South Kivu in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
are controlled by large commercial growing operations, leaving local
farmers with less productive areas of land that are more vulnerable to
climate change. On the steep slopes of the mountains, heavy rains have
consistently washed away crops and, during the dry season, the area is
prone to wildfires. Mercy Corps is working with farmers to develop
climate-resilient strategies to crop production.

Chantal and her husband have farmed their land for 20 years, growing
beans, maize, and cassava. But extreme weather often left them without
enough to feed their family.

Chantal began working with Mercy Corps four years ago where she learned
farming techniques like how to dig channels to drain water during the
rainy season, and use that water to irrigate the crops in dry times. Since
then, her cassava production has increased threefold and her family can
now eat three meals a day.
