Salmon Need Cold Water. We're Tracking It Across Continents.

From the Olympic Peninsula to Mongolia, our thermal detectives are knee-deep in rivers, searching out cold spots. “We have the tools and tech to get this data, and it's pretty inexpensive,” says Cyndi Curtis, Wild Salmon Center's Oregon North Coast Manager. “The bigger investments we have to make are in time, patience, and creativity." Across continents, we're doing that creative legwork to find and protect the coldest water pockets in a growing list of rivers: places key for salmon riding out warm weather. For cold cases, these discoveries just keep getting hotter!

One Year In, Oregon's Private Forest Accord Is Taking Shape

A lot has happened since Oregon’s landmark Private Forest Accord was signed into law last year. The historic agreement broke decades of gridlock in Oregon on how best to manage private industrial forestlands. Now, it promises to protect cold water for salmon, fish, wildlife, and people on streams across 10 million acres of private land in Oregon. But we're not out of the woods yet. Federal agencies still have to approve the final rules by December 31, 2027, or the new law will be scrapped completely. Gathering New Urgency for River Conservation at One Fly

Every fall, conservation groups join fly fishing companies, outfitters, guides, and anglers at One Fly: a renowned fly fishing tournament centered on the blue ribbon trout streams of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Wild Salmon Center's 2023 team included (pictured below from right to left) WSC Chairman and Orrick CEO Mitch Zuklie, WSC Ambassador Ken Morrish of Fly Water Travel, WSC VP David Finkel, and RIO Products R&D Design Engineer Chris Walker. "Each year, we make new friends and relationships at One Fly," Finkel says. "But most importantly, the engagement and urgency around river conservation deepens. From Jackson Hole to strongholds across the Pacific, momentum is growing to save wild fish via thoughtful, far-sighted strategies and partnerships grounded in science."
