Mental health and addiction services should be covered by insurance just like treatment for any other disease. You can thank the Parity Act for that. Unfortunately, this important law doesn’t always get enforced, leaving the burden on families looking for care. You can help.

📢 Take Action for Mental Health

The Parity Act is a federal law that requires most health plans to cover mental health and substance use disorder treatment the same way they cover treatment for any other disease. However, millions of families still struggle to get insurance coverage for needed treatment due to weak enforcement and poor implementation of the law. That’s not fair. No one should have to jump through hoops or face more limits to see a mental health or addiction professional than they would to see a specialist for another health condition.

The federal government is now considering policies to strengthen parity requirements. Proposed rules would require insurance plans to:

- prove that they offer equal coverage of mental health/addiction care
- evaluate plans' provider networks to ensure equal access to mental health and substance use disorder services
- implement penalties for insurance plans that do not comply with parity requirements

We need your help to urge policymakers to finalize the proposed rules. If you or your loved one have faced barriers in accessing mental health or addiction care, sharing details about your experience can help show the federal government why these proposals are needed.

Send a comment letter now ([link removed] ) (comments are due by October 17) to help advance parity in mental health and addiction care.
