For months, House Republicans have been threatening a government shutdown. Now, we have less than two weeks to reach an agreement.

Let's be clear: A government shutdown should never be a negotiating tactic; it would have real and dire consequences for millions of Americans. Government workers won't receive their hard-earned paychecks. Our veterans could be left without access to essential healthcare services. Military families could face financial hardships, and the broader economy would suffer.

The idea of a government shutdown goes against our core values of responsibility and public service – and it's a stark reminder of how divisive and dysfunctional the House has become under Speaker McCarthy.
