As the federal government’s special pandemic-era eligibility rules for Medicaid have expired, millions are being purged from their health insurance across the country–up to 15 million people could lose coverage.

In the haste to purge folks of their coverage, many state governments have seen high levels of disenrollments for procedural reasons like unreturned paperwork. This violates federal requirements in how the reviews of people enrolled on Medicaid are conducted and are resulting in eligible adults and children being kicked off the safety net health insurance program.

The Biden administration can and must step in to protect access. Congress granted the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) the power to ensure that states are not improperly removing Medicaid beneficiaries. The Biden administration can withhold funding from state Medicaid programs if good-faith efforts aren't made to prevent procedural terminations.

President Biden has urged a slowing of the purge to avoid administrative errors. But his administration can do more–publicly identify which states face the most serious issues, use their Congressionally granted power to monitor and oversee the Medicaid processes, and withhold funding from states improperly purging their low-income residents.

Millions of Americans are at risk of losing coverage–it’s time to step in and protect us.
