Dear John,
We have some exciting news to share! President Biden has announced the creation of a new federal Office for Gun Violence Prevention. This marks a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against gun violence, a development we’ve been encouraging and eagerly awaiting.
Washington State was a national leader in establishing a similar administrative focus at the state level. Our very own Office of Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention (OFSVP), established by Senate Bill 6288 in 2020, served as a pioneering model in gun violence prevention. Being one of the first offices of its kind, OFSVP’s continues to serve communities in Washington State in data collection, administrative support, and grant-making focused on organizations disproportionately impacted by the gun violence epidemic.
With President Biden’s new federal office, we see an opportunity for our experiences in Washington State to guide and inspire national strategies for reducing gun violence. It takes a coordinated effort at all levels of government to tackle this public health crisis effectively. By putting on the pressure, we are seeing significant momentum on a state and now national level. |
