The transportation sector is the largest contributor of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, in the nation. It's time to make significant changes to cut down our greenhouse gas emissions and address the urgent climate crisis that continues to worsen.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recently released updated Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. This represents a major opportunity to slash emissions originating from our vehicles' tailpipes. Under these new standards, automakers are required to increase fuel efficiency in passenger cars and light-duty vehicles every year through 2032.
This move alone could prevent over 900 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
These updated standards don't just affect our environment; they can also have a direct impact on the health of communities that have long suffered from transportation pollution. Low-income communities of color have disproportionately borne the brunt of health risks associated with environmental injustices caused by highways and busy roads.
