McCarthy Demands 8% Spending Cut, Border Wall to Avert Shutdown

For decades, government shutdowns have been a “normal” part of our political and media cycle. Republicans use the threat of a shutdown to demand things like draconian spending cuts to programs working families rely on or other changes to government policy that the American people don’t support.
These shutdowns come at a cost -- especially here in our Commonwealth, where millions of Virginians either work for the federal government or are otherwise affected by furloughs and shutdowns.
Perhaps even worse, it’s an embarrassment to our nation that seemingly every year, our government screeches to a halt because one party threatens the other with a shutdown.
Now, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy -- a politician who is clearly beholden to the MAGA wing of his GOP caucus -- is careening our government toward shutdown.
