NEW: Learning for Justice Magazine, Fall 2023

Civics Education for Democracy, Learning for Justice magazine, Fall 2023

Civics literacy is crucial if our nation is to achieve an inclusive, multiracial democracy. For democracy to flourish in the context of differences, it must uphold the human rights of all people. In the words of LFJ Director Jalaya Liles Dunn, we need an approach to democracy that “centers equity and inclusion, not merely the majority’s interests.”

The new Fall 2023 issue of Learning for Justice magazine—available now—explores the role of civics literacy and inclusive education in our society. The issue features a series of thought-provoking, in-depth articles focusing on the ways in which civics literacy and inclusive education are essential for democracy.

You can access the online version of LFJ magazine here. Subscribers will receive their print editions shortly. (If you haven’t subscribed yet, sign up here for future issues—it’s free!)

A Time of Transformation and Possibility

In this exclusive interview from the new Fall 2023 issue of LFJ magazine, Margaret Huang, president and chief executive officer of the Southern Poverty Law Center, emphasizes that, though challenging, this is also a time of great possibility. Huang explains her hopes: “When I look across our movement today, I see so many people of different races, genders, sexual orientations, abilities and backgrounds showing up as allies for one another in the fight for justice and liberation. … I’m excited that we’re tapping into the wisdom and energy of many generations to guide the fight ahead for our democracy.”

Civics for Democracy

In this “Perspectives” column, LFJ Director Jalaya Liles Dunn contends that civics should “represent the agency and change of each generation, demonstrating the needs of the time and how people showed up for the collective good.”
