LULAC Expresses Outrage, Commits To Aggressively Fight DOJ’s New Office To Strip
Citizenship From Americans
================================================================================

Nation’s Oldest & Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Responds to DOJ’s New
“Denaturalization Section” Created to Strip Citizenship Rights from Naturalized
Immigrants

Washington, DC – Today, the League of United Latin American (LULAC) responded to
the U.S. Department of Justice’s announcement that it created a new department
within the agency called the “Denaturalization Section” meant to review cases
involving immigrants who obtained U.S. citizenship status.

LULAC National President Domingo Garcia issued the following statement:

“LULAC is disgusted that the Trump Administration would create an office to
attempt to bully, scare and intimidate Latinos and all immigrants or refugees who
have gained lawful citizenship. There is no question that the government should
revoke citizenship from convicted terrorists, war criminals and sex offenders.
However, this new DOJ denaturalization task force was created to strip
naturalized Americans of their citizenship by using new criteria that could
result in thousands of Americans losing their citizenship. This new office is yet
another one of Donald Trump’s and Stephen Miller’s tools to carry their
Administration’s xenophobic and racist agenda. LULAC is concerned of the
potential abuse by racist elements in the administration. Our organization had to
file suit to stop the state of Texas from purging 98,000 naturalized U.S. citizen
voters from its voter rolls in 2019.”

LULAC National CEO Sindy Benavides issued the following statement:

“The Trump-Miller Administration wants people to live in fear by continuing to
push scare tactics that only further prove his alliance to a white supremacist
agenda. We know that this Administration will use any excuse to deport a
naturalized immigrant, even one that obtained citizenship legally, including
considering smaller infractions like misstatements or small errors on the
citizenship application as a basis for deportation. LULAC will be monitoring any
attempt by the U.S. DOJ Denaturalization Section to violate the civil rights of
our communities.”
