Explore new state-specific data on health insurance, income, poverty, and more released last week from the 2022 American Community Survey 1-year estimates.
*?? Did You Know? *Twenty-seven states had a higher percentage of people with health insurance coverage in 2022 than in 2021 according to American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates.

2022 Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Release [ [link removed] ]
The U.S. Census Bureau recently announced that real median household income in 2022 fell in comparison to 2021. The official poverty rate of 11.5% was not statistically different between 2021 and 2022. The Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) rate in 2022 was 12.4%, an increase of 4.6 percentage points from 2021. This is the first increase in the overall SPM poverty rate since 2010. Meanwhile, 92.1% of the U.S. population had health insurance coverage for all or part of 2022 (compared to 91.7% in 2021).

Uninsured Rates Decreased in Over Half of U.S. States in 2022

In 25 states where the uninsured rate decreased, at least one of the many types of public or private insurance changed significantly. Only Utah and North Dakota had decreases in the uninsured rate without significant changes in the types of coverage.

Median Household Income After Taxes Fell 8.8% in 2022
Post Tax Income and Poverty [ [link removed] ]
Real median household income after taxes fell 8.8% to $64,240 from 2021 to 2022 and the poverty rate after taxes as measured by the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) increased 59% to 12.4%.
These significant changes in after-tax income and poverty rates of U.S. households were much larger than the annual changes in before-tax income and poverty.
