John,
Student loan payments start back up again next month, and most people can’t afford to pay.
We must urgently cancel all student debt. President Biden must keep the promise he made to cancel student debt for over 40 million people by pursuing one of the several alternative paths at his disposal to deliver debt relief.
Together with almost 90 members of Congress, I’ve signed onto a renewed call to action urging President Biden to carry out his commitment to racial justice and Black, brown, and historically excluded communities by using every means available to cancel student debt by early 2024. Will you join me as a grassroots co-signer now?
This is a racial and economic justice issue. Black borrowers have nearly twice as much student debt ($52,700) after four years of college as our white peers ($28,000), and that amount grows with interest. Due to anti-Black racism, Black borrowers’ student debt is often higher than their median annual income. And not only do Black women carry more student debt than any other group in America, but we carry it the longest.
Last year, President Biden made the historic decision to cancel up to $20,000 in student debt, providing relief to as many as 43 million people. This was undoubtedly the result of years-long organizing by advocates, activists, impacted borrowers, voters who took to the polls in 2020, and progressive lawmakers like myself, who have all called for executive action to address the nearly $2 trillion student loan debt crisis.
In June, the U.S. Supreme Court, a cesspool of corruption and misconduct, struck down the president’s plan in a decision that clearly put profits over people and corporations (like Missouri’s student loan company MOHELA) over communities.
This setback is not the end of our campaign to cancel student debt. The president of the United States has additional tools to provide relief. President Biden must continually find ways to use his authority to cancel student debt, address the rising cost of college, and make higher education affordable for all students who choose that path.
Join the call for President Biden to use every tool available to cancel student debt by early 2024.

Especially in the wealthiest country in the world, no one should go into debt to receive a higher education.
I want to see all student debt canceled. I know how hard it is to walk through life with that burden.
For many people, the burden of student debt is never-ending. Nearly three million people over the age of 62 owe more than $110 billion in federal student loans and almost one-third of them are in default, putting these seniors at risk of having their Social Security benefits garnished.
Almost half of Latino borrowers would have their entire debt forgiven by canceling $20,000, and canceling at least $50,000 in debt would increase the wealth of Black Americans by 40% nationwide.
Now, imagine the impact of canceling all student debt.
This is why our work must not stop. All of our economic policy decisions must be universal and rooted in racial, gender, and economic justice at their core. In order to reduce the racial wealth gap and advance a just and equitable economy for all, we must alleviate the burden of student debt and ensure universal access to higher education. Nothing is off the table, except inaction.

With love,
Cori
