Health Care Service Price Comparisons

In their article in the September issue of Health Affairs, Aditi Sen and
colleagues from the Health Care Cost Institute compare prices for common
services in self-insured plans with those prices in fully insured plans.

The authors determine that for most services, prices were moderately
higher in self-insured plans than in fully insured plans
.

They note that "relying on market-based negotiations and incentives
between self-insured employers and providers is unlikely to be effective
at lowering health care prices."

Sen and colleagues suggest that these findings could encourage policy
efforts to lower prices for those who have employer-sponsored insurance.

For more on this paper's findings, check out today's episode of A Health
Podyssey

featuring Aditi Sen and Health Affairs' Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil.
