A few weeks ago we emailed you about the government's plans to scrap rules in place to protect our rivers and waterways from pollutants from new housing developments.

Now we know why. A fifth of Conservative Party donations have come from property developers in the last decade and the government wants to get donations flowing again in the run up to the next general election.

We stopped the government this time. Green peer Jenny Jones played a leading role in a House of Lords rebellion which halted the plans, leaving existing safeguards in place to protect our precious waterways.

But we need to do more. We urgently need to take action on water and bring it back into public ownership so it is run in the interests of people and nature, not profit.
