Dear John,
Will they or won’t they shut down the government …
That’s the question we’re asking as hardliners in the U.S. House of Representatives threaten to disrupt the basic functioning of government unless their extreme demands, which are unpopular with the public, are met.
It’s clear that GOP extremists in the House do not seem to care what impact a shutdown would have on everyday Americans like you. In fact, many of them seem eager to roll the dice and shut down the government!
According to Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, “If a shutdown occurs, then so be it …”
That’s why I urge you to sign the National Committee’s EMERGENCY PETITION TO CONGRESS and put your elected officials on notice: “Americans Don’t Want You to Shut Down the Government!”
Remember, many of these politicians who are promising once again to hold our government hostage are the same people who want to cut and privatize Social Security and Medicare, and who want to roll back critical drug pricing reforms that are helping lower high drug costs for seniors.
While the possibility of a government shutdown does not pose as serious a threat to Social Security and Medicare as the averted federal default last spring would have, it is of serious concern to seniors and their advocates. Social Security payments would continue to go out because the process is largely automated. But, depending on how long a shutdown might last, customer service for Social Security claimants and beneficiaries could be significantly disrupted.
Bottom line, threatening a government shutdown if the demands of a small but vocal minority of lawmakers in the House don’t get their way is no way to conduct the People’s business. Help us send that message loud and clear!
So please, sign our EMERGENCY PETITION today to let your elected officials in Washington, DC know that you reject yet another effort by GOP hardliners in the House to hold the government hostage to their extremist demands!
