| Friend, A sobering new study says it all: One in three California households cannot afford a decent standard of living.(1) Rather than work with the Biden administration and Democrats to control costs and put money back in the pockets of working families, House of Speaker Kevin McCarthy is pushing the government toward a shutdown.(2) Speaker McCarthy is enormously well positioned to help the people of his state. But instead, he is leading a wasteful impeachment inquiry into Biden and fostering Republican infighting over the budget. McCarthy may be Speaker of the House, but he is first a congressman from California, and it’s time Californians reminded him who he works for. McCarthy holds one of the most powerful positions in the nation, and he represents a state that is literally the fourth largest economy in the world.(3) In Bakersfield, in McCarthy's district, families spent $850 more on each kid's food, school supplies, and clothes this year than they did in 2022 -- money that hadn't shown up in their paychecks to compensate.(4) But McCarthy is allowing himself and Congress to be dragged around by the Freedom Caucus and the likes of Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert, who represent only a tiny fraction of the nation. California families are paying $13,000 a year in child care and $10,000 a year in food, while wages stagnate. (5,6) We still have no national paid family leave, no minimum standard of health care, no real safety net. Yet, McCarthy’s main focus is impeaching Joe Biden?! It’s time for McCarthy to refocus.
