As digital financial services have spread across the globe, so have financial scams. In Uganda, for example, IPA research found that 33% of mobile money users were targeted by fraudsters in the past six months. This summer, IPA's Consumer Protection Research Initiative (CPRI) visited Tanzania, Uganda, and Nigeria to share consumer protection research insights and discuss promising practices. Staff from CPRI and IPA country offices worked with regulators, policymakers, local researchers, and consumer rights organizations to identify consumer protection risks in the three countries and develop potential solutions.

IPA Releases 2022 Annual Report

The year 2022 marked a momentous milestone for IPA as we celebrated our 20th anniversary and reflected on the progress achieved together. Twenty years ago, Dean Karlan saw that global development investments were not sufficiently guided by rigor, data, or evidence, prompting him to found IPA with a vision to create a world with more evidence and less poverty.
The growth and achievements we’ve witnessed since have surpassed even Dean’s initial aspirations. None of us could have foreseen that, two decades later, we would have successfully completed over 900 studies, collaborating with hundreds of researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers. Nor could we have imagined establishing a strong presence in 20 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Today, we are proud to have more than 600 dedicated full-time staff, the majority of whom are from and operate in the very countries where we work.

Researchers: Donald Green, Dylan Groves, Constantine Manda, Beatrice Montano, and Bardia Rahmani
In Tanzania, where 36 percent of women marry before the age of 18, and 30 percent have limited say in choosing their life partners, researchers partnered with IPA and the community-based NGO UZIKWASA to explore the impact of the radio program "Tamapendo." This locally-produced radio drama aimed to promote the idea of a girl's right to resist early forced marriage, drawing inspiration from Islamic teachings. The Tamapendo drama reduced acceptance of forced marriage by 9.3 percentage points and early marriage by 4.8 percentage points three weeks after the drama aired. Fifteen months later, researchers continued to see evidence of effects on attitudes towards forced marriage.
