Back-to-School with Egale Canada

Egale Canada has launched a new back-to-school campaign to provide resources and tools to support educators, students, and families in creating inclusive schools.

Egale’s national report, Still in Every Class in Every School (2021), shows that 2SLGBTQI students continue to face homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia at school. This reality in our schools is in addition to the undeniable rise in anti-2SLGBTQI hate that we are seeing across the country and around the world.

This is why it’s more important than ever that we all come together to create safe and inclusive schools for 2SLGBTQI students.

Egale’s back-to-school resources have been developed to complement our existing Inclusive Schools initiatives that provide resources specifically tailored for all members of our school communities including educators, students, administrators, and parents/guardians. Resources include curriculum-aligned toolkits with videos, classroom materials, and discussion questions; downloadable school posters; educational webinars; and more.

Every member of your school community is encouraged to visit egale.ca/BackToSchool to access our free resources and learn more about how to be a champion for creating inclusive classrooms for all students.

UR Pride Centre for Sexuality and Gender Diversity v. Government of Saskatchewan et al.

Bennett Jensen, Director of Legal at Egale Canada and McCarthy Tétrault LLP as co-legal counsel for UR Pride Centre for Sexuality and Gender Diversity have commenced legal action against the Government of Saskatchewan, as the “Use of Preferred First Name and Pronouns by Students” policy violates the rights of gender diverse students under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

If the policy remains in effect, it will cause devastating and irreparable harm to gender diverse students under 16 years old who do not feel safe coming out at home. These students will face an impossible choice: be outed to their parents under the policy or remain closeted at school.

Join us in calling on the Government of Saskatchewan to withdraw the policy so that all students can have equal opportunities for safety and success.

We will continue to provide updates on the case on our website

In recent weeks, Egale’s Executive Director, Helen Kennedy was featured in national and international news outlets speaking out about the Government of Canada’s advisory for 2SLGBTQI travelers to the United States, and the need to take a serious look at how safe our 2SLGBTQI communities are right here at home.

Helen spoke about this to The New York Times, The Guardian, The Associated Press, and several national Canadian outlets.
