demand justice for Jaahnavi?
John,
Did you see the email from a fellow MoveOn member last Friday? As news
outlets continue to report on the disgusting behavior of the Seattle
Police Department following the tragic killing of 23-year-old Indian
student Jaahnavi Kandula, more disturbing information has been unearthed
about Detective Daniel Auderer—the police officer who cruelly mocked her
death.
[ [link removed] ]Jaahnavi’s life had inherent value. Sign the petition to demand that
the officer who killed her, the officer who joked about her death, and the
entire Seattle Police Department be held accountable.

Detective Auderer's heartless comments about Jaahnavi were not an isolated
incident. Recent reports have uncovered more disturbing evidence regarding
Detective Auderer, including 18 prior internal investigations for sexual
harassment, verbal abuse, profiling, violence, and more.^1 These incidents
disproportionately include harassment and violence against marginalized
people—including immigrants, women, Black people and other people of
color, unhoused individuals, and those struggling with mental illness.^2
[ [link removed] ]The failure of the SPD to hold Detective Auderer accountable for these
prior infractions makes the department culpable. The entire system is
complicit. Sign the petition to demand justice for Jaahnavi NOW.
The SPD claims they safeguard the Seattle community, but they are failing
their residents. This year, SPD’s budget ballooned to over $370
million.^3 They are using taxpayer dollars to shamefully protect officers
like Auderer, who openly engage in racist, xenophobic, and sexist
behavior, all while getting a pay raise! Enough is enough.
SPD has already shown that they won’t hold Detective Auderer accountable
unless we force them to. [ [link removed] ]Will you sign the petition and share it with
three of your friends and family members?
Thanks for all you do.

[ [link removed] ]Sign the petition to demand justice for Jaahnavi Kandula!
Dear fellow MoveOn member,
This week, the Seattle Police Department released body camera footage
revealing the dehumanizing and disgusting response by SPD Detective Daniel
Auderer after another officer, Kevin Dave, hit and killed 23-year-old
Northeastern University student Jaahnavi Kandula in an SPD vehicle earlier
this year.^4
In the horrifying recording, Detective Auderer can be heard on the phone
with another officer laughing and joking about Jaahnavi, cruelly
describing her as just "a regular person" and dismissively stating that
the city should simply "write a check" for her death. "She was 26, anyway.
She had limited value," he is heard saying.^5
Jaahnavi was a daughter, granddaughter, sister, cousin, friend, classmate,
coworker, and loved one. Her life had infinite value. [ [link removed] ]Not only should
the officer who recklessly hit and killed her be held accountable, but
Detective Auderer—who disgraced his oath to serve and protect—needs to be
investigated and fired for his horrifying disregard for human life.
The Seattle Police Department has betrayed the trust of the community.
Help get justice for Jaahnavi by demanding Seattle and Washington elected
officials hold the Seattle Police Department, Officer Kevin Dave, and
Detective Daniel Auderer accountable.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington, the
shameful comments by Detective Auderer are part of a pattern of violence
and harm caused by SPD and disproportionately experienced by Indigenous,
Black, and other people of color.^6 The awful racist, xenophobic, ageist,
and sexist undertones in Detective Auderer’s comments make it clear that
he felt like Jaahnavi’s life was of "limited value" because she was a
young, Indian woman. [ [link removed] ]The Seattle community cannot trust SPD to address
racialized and gendered violence when their officers are the same ones
systematically perpetrating it.
Just last year, Stop AAPI Hate released a report on the increase in
violence and discrimination against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
White supremacy and patriarchy are inextricably connected, with the
organization reporting that anti-AAPI violence disproportionately targeted
AAPI women, nonbinary people, and other marginalized genders.^7 [ [link removed] ]No
matter the professional, social, and financial contributions by Indian
communities in the United States, Jaahnavi’s death is a devastating
reminder that we are unable to escape racism and inequality.
Jaahnavi’s life had inherent value. Her mother made sacrifices to send her
daughter to the United States in hopes she would have a better life,
trusting that she would be treated with dignity and respect. Instead, her
life was treated with complete disregard by the very individuals and
systems claiming they would protect her.
[ [link removed] ]Add your name and then share with three friends to help spread the
word and demand that the SPD, Officer Dave, and Detective Auderer be held
accountable.
Thanks for all you do.
