Dear Friend of MCV,

As you know, protecting the Maine we all love is our #1 priority — but our mission of conservation extends far beyond our state's borders, and our allies at Montana Conservation Voters are asking for our help.

For years, conservationists have been working tirelessly to pass legislation to protect tens of thousands of acres of wilderness in some of the most beautiful country in western Montana — and they are closer than ever before to protecting it forever.

Passing the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act is the best chance we have to protect some of Montana’s most beloved lands and water. The bill will have a vote in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on September 21st — a committee Senator Angus King sits on. If the committee advances the bill, it will be a historic step forward in this important fight.

While we expect Sen. King to continue his record of prioritizing conservation, he needs to hear from Mainers now that this legislation is critically important to all of us, too.

Made famous in “A River Runs Through It,” the Blackfoot River has long been beloved by residents of Montana and has captured the hearts of people across the country. This legislation would protect another 80,000 acres in this region forever. The bill is supported by Sen. Jon Tester and 84% of Montanans but has long been held hostage by Montana's other Senator, Steve Daines.

The Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act was developed by a broad cross-section of conservationists, recreationists, timber harvesters, community leaders, and regular folks.

It protects nearly 80,000 acres and ensures that these lands will be managed for the benefit of wildlife and local communities, while also enhancing timber production and forest restoration. BCSA will also establish two outdoor recreation areas, supporting access and the local economy while providing new motorized access and preserving mountain biking opportunities.

You have the power to help protect this special place. Please contact Sen. King before the vote on Thursday and tell him that now is the time to protect the Blackfoot River. For all of us. Forever. [[link removed]]
