September is National Emergency Preparedness Month and the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is using this opportunity to remind Michiganders that emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere and to anyone.
The MSP/EMHSD is uniting with agencies nationwide under the theme ?Take Control in 1, 2, 3? to prepare older adults for disasters, specifically older adults from communities that are disproportionally impacted by the all-hazard events, which continue to threaten the nation.
Older adults can face greater risks when it comes to the multitude of extreme weather events and emergencies we now face, especially if they are living alone, are low-income, have a disability or live in rural areas.
For more information about emergency preparedness, visit Michigan.gov/MIReady and follow the MSP/EMHSD on Twitter at @MichEMHS.

Mark your calendars! The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is conducting a nationwide test of the Emergency Broadcast System to ensure its effectiveness in delivering crucial alerts to the public.
The test will alert cell phones, TVs and radios across the country on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 2:20 p.m. EST.
The message will read along the lines of: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed."
In case of severe weather or other significant events, the test may be postponed to October 11th.

While on patrol in East Lansing, Tpr. Harris Edwards of the MSP Lansing Post noticed a motorist with a flat tire. Trooper Harris not only assisted with changing the tire, but showed the young man how to perform the change himself in the event this happens in the future!
