In 2016, I needed to have surgery on both of my kidneys.

It was risky and unknown, with the surgical technique only created five years earlier. I knew it was risky, but inaction wasn’t possible if I wanted to stay alive.

I also knew that this new procedure could become an anchor of debt for the rest of my life.

After the operation, I let my healthcare bill sit on the counter for days out of fear of what was inside. And the truth is, although my insurance covered part of the procedure, I had to take on serious medical debt that took years to pay off.

Friend, nobody should go into debt because they’re sick, but far too many in our community don’t have the privilege of coverage that keeps necessary, life-saving treatment costs manageable.

It’s one of the realities that drove me to run for Congress, and a fight I take extremely seriously as we battle special interests who want to keep the status quo.

I will always be your voice in Congress, and I will always take on the idea of profits over people. If you’re able, please donate what you can today to help me fight off dark money attacks coming my way.

People can’t focus on making a living when they don’t feel well, either physically or mentally. And the specter of bill collectors and life-altering debt for an operation can be one of the greatest mental weights people can have.

We need to be setting people up for success, and quality, affordable health care is essential to providing opportunity for all.

Everyone has the right to be well, and that means receiving care that doesn’t cause financial jeopardy.
