Friday, Sept 22, 2023
4:30 PM
________________________________________________________________________
Join us for a celebration of Wyoming Archaeology Awareness Month and Hispanic Heritage Month at the Wyoming State Museum!
● 4:30pm - Dance performances by Las Angelitas Unidas y Los Rayos de Sol.
● 5:00pm - Lecture by Dr. Alison Krogel, "The Aspen Archives: Sheepherder Testimonies (1925-present)"
The Aspen Archives consists of historical and contemporary photographs and maps, oral histories of sheepherders, ranchers, and artisanal wool processors, and multilingual narratives (Spanish-English-Quechua) detailing the origins of sheepherding in Colorado and the American West. Dr. Krogel will provide context for understanding some of the long-standing links between sheep ranches in northwestern Colorado with herders from rural high country communities in northern New Mexico, Mexico, and Perú.
El Gran Pastor Taqueria will be on site from 3:30-6:30pm. Come grab some good food and enjoy the fiesta!

A message from our Curator of Education
________________________________________________________________________
My name is Jeremy Thornbrugh; I’m the Curator of Education here at the Wyoming State Museum. With the new school year in full swing, I wanted to reach out to give you an update on the museum’s impact last school year, and to let any teachers out there know how they can take advantage of our museum programs this year!
First, lets talk about how you (or a teacher you know) can book one of our free world-class field trips or education trunks. Just check out our programs page [ [link removed] ] to pick out one (or more) of the different programs we are offering right now. Regardless of what grade you teach, you can find something fun and educational for your students. That same webpage will have the link to submit a request. It’s that easy!
Next, I wanted to share with you how we impacted the educational community, last year. During the last school year, our museum reached 14,337 school students from throughout Wyoming, across the USA, and around the world!
We taught about 10,000 school children through our phenomenal field trips. These programs cover human cultures, history, wildlife, dinosaurs, geology, and more! They also let kids do things like dissect owl pellets, play a life action Oregon Trail game, touch dinosaur bones, and so much more. Every field trip can be taught here at the museum or across the world through our virtual field trips.
Last year, about 4,000 school kids saw one of our education trunks right inside their classroom. These trunks bring history, culture, and conservation to life within our Wyoming and Front Range schools. Each trunk has about 40-50 items, including things like historic clothing, Native American beadwork, grizzly bear pelts, toys from the 1800s, and many more items. Each one also has a curriculum that brings it all together for the teachers. This year, we’re also offering virtual education trunks with 360-degree photos of all of these items. This way teachers from anywhere in the world can participate in our trunk program!
Personally, I want to thank you all for being a part of the Wyoming State Museum family. Without your patronage and support, the museum could not fulfill our mission to protect history, exhibit it, and teach about it. If you have any questions about our programs, feel free to call me.
With gratitude and respect,
Jeremy Thornbrugh

Indigenous People's Day
Monday, Oct 9, 2023
10 AM - 3 PM
________________________________________________________________________
Indigenous Peoples’ Day was established to honor the traditional and living cultures of the first people to live on this land. Visit the museum between 10 am and 3 pm on Monday, October 9, to meet three contemporary Native artists, witness their methods, and learn about their artistic processes.
Marcus is a Northern Arapaho master beadworker. He began beading at the age of 10 by watching his mother and grandmother, and learning by their sides. He has been beading full time since 1990 and has art pieces (Fully beaded McClellan Saddles) in the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, WY, Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, and in the MorDo Collection in Scottsdale AZ.
Marcus will be working on a beaded dress that will eventually make its way into the Wyoming State Museum permanent. He will be joined by his family members Charles Benjamin, James Dewey, and Geraldine Dewey, who will sing, dance, and share the history of these traditions.

New Exhibits Available ONLINE!
________________________________________________________________________
Thanks to a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, we created 360° images of some objects in our collections to preserve them digitally and make them more accessible to the public! We also used this imagery to create two new digital exhibits for you to explore:
The first is on a Japanese Friendship Doll, Miss Fujiko Yamanashi. This exhibit explores the friendship doll program between the U.S. and Japan, and stories about Miss Yamanashi herself. You can check it out here:

The second online exhibit is on two guns from our collection and the WY stories that go with them. You can see both of these guns in person in our new "Down the Barrel of History" exhibit that opened last week! You can view the digital versions of the guns here:

Halloween at the Museum
Sunday, Oct 29, 2023
12 - 4 PM
________________________________________________________________________
Experience the magic of the past by trick-or-treating through history.
Our Halloween at the Museum celebration is one of our biggest events of the year! Each year, more than a thousand community members come to the museum to experience history brought to life. Meet characters from Wyoming’s past, get up close to specimens and objects from the museum collection, and enjoy fun activities like a sheepherding race and a “bacon toss.”
Every kid who participates gets a bag of trick-or-treat candy, generously provided by SCHEELS in Johnstown, Co.
