Dear Friend,
Today, August 6 is the 54th anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.Â
Instead of commemorating the landmark voting rights legislation, many of us are in the trenches fighting to curb the voter suppression unleashed by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to gut the VRA in Shelby County v. Holder <[link removed]>.
The Court’s decision paved a path for states to pass a wave of new restrictive voting laws that disproportionately impact communities of color — and today, individuals across the country are mobilizing to call foul and demand action.
Tonight, AAI will stand with allied civil rights and advocacy organizations at the MLK Jr. Memorial in DC to call for the restoration of the Voting Rights Act. Please join us for this important event at 7:00pm EDT. <[link removed]>
Since Shelby, restrictive voting laws have been passed in 20 states.
Voter ID laws, gerrymandering, and voter purges are putting up barriers to voting for all people, and especially young people and underrepresented communities.
Protecting the right to vote for every citizen is critical to a functioning democracy, which is why passing the Voting Rights Advancement Act (HR-4) to fix the Supreme Court’s abysmal ruling is an urgent priority.Â
This August, Americans are taking action in their communities to say enough is enough, and to demand that Congress pass voting rights protections to reinstate the most important enforcement provisions of the Voting Rights Act.Â
Join us today, August 6, the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, by attending the DC VRA Vigil to shine a light for democracy and to demand Congress pass the VRAA. <[link removed]>
See you tonight!Â
