California takes a critical step towards making Big Polluters pay!
|
California is suing Big Polluters! The lawsuit claims that five of the largest oil and gas corporations, and a trade group representing the industry, deceived the public about the risks of extracting and burning fossil fuels. And it argues that these Big Polluters, not Californians, should have to pay for billions of dollars in damages from devastating wildfires, unprecedented storms, and other climate impacts.
With this announcement, California joins a long list of cities and states around the country -- including cities and counties in California itself -- that have opened investigations and initiated lawsuits against Big Polluters.
California’s lawsuit won’t solve climate change, but it will be a critical first step in unlocking the resources needed to implement the just solutions we need to address the climate crisis. And as one of the largest states in the U.S., this lawsuit sends a strong message to Big Polluters that they can no longer get away with delaying climate action.
The climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges facing millions of people today. And in California alone, the impacts of climate change are clear. From rising sea levels along the coast to raging wildfires, this is a crisis that is currently barreling through California -- and disproportionately impacting Black and Indigenous communities, other communities of color, and low-income communities across the state.
This decision will have far-reaching impacts on our collective progress to secure climate justice. And it would not have been possible without the organizing power and efforts of California’s residents, particularly frontline communities, who have long demanded accountability and justice for the climate crisis.
Repairing the harm that Big Polluters inflict on California’s communities is imperative. This lawsuit is a starting point for justice -- and one that must lead to a meaningful and equitable outcome that ensures climate and land reparations for frontline and Indigenous communities first and foremost.
It’s time for the fossil fuel industry to stop writing the rules -- and start paying for the damage it causes. And California’s lawsuit is a huge and important step for climate accountability.
Share this exciting news with your friends and family today. The demand for climate justice continues to grow and together we can make Big Polluters pay!
Onward,
