Last night, House Republicans trumpeted a plan to avoid shutting down the government. If you read the fine print though, that plan is unlikely to even receive a vote in the House, let alone pass the Senate. They’re simply interested in telling the media a story that they’re moving towards an agreement while they finalize their budget.

The long-term plan will come out of the Budget committee. And last week, the Budget chairman, Republican Rep. Jodey Arrington, previewed its contents for Politico:[1]

The House Republican budget resolution will save $16 trillion over a decade, Arrington said. To reach that number, GOP leaders will count the spurring of economic growth, as well as “serious reform” to other federal entitlement programs like Medicaid.

That’s where Republicans are headed: As much as $16 trillion in cuts to Medicaid.

And that’s not all: Arrington, a veteran of George W. Bush’s attempt to privatize Social Security, plans to propose a closed-door commission to fast-track cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
