Hi John, it’s Jim Obergefell – as in Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized same-sex marriage in the United States.
In a second, I’m going to tell you what’s at stake in this election and why we need to send Josh Riley to Congress. But first, can you make a contribution to Josh Riley today to help him win one of the most competitive House races in the country? ([link removed])
When my partner John was diagnosed with ALS, we decided to get married. Saying “I do” in a medical jet on an airport runway in Maryland – because that’s where same-sex marriage was legal – was the happiest moment of our life together. When we went home to Ohio and learned the state would not recognize our marriage, or even list me on his death certificate, we took our fight to court… and we won.
When the Supreme Court threw out the right to an abortion last summer, Clarence Thomas put our own hard-fought victory in the crosshairs and said he was coming to end same-sex marriage next. When one right is taken away, every other right we’ve come to rely on in this country is at risk.
We can’t – and won’t – allow MAGA Republicans to tear away our hard-fought freedoms and send us back. That’s why I’m fighting to elect leaders like Josh Riley, who are committed to protecting our rights. Will you join me by making a contribution to Josh today? ([link removed])
Yes, Josh’s race is about abortion rights and LGBTQ rights.
It’s also about all the rights and freedoms that MAGA Republicans would tear away if given the opportunity – the right to love who you love, the right to make decisions about your own body, the right to breathe clean air and drink clean water, the right to retire with dignity, and the right to feel safe in your school and your community.
Josh’s opponent, Marc Molinaro, has been in politics for 30 years, and he’s opposed every one of those rights every step of the way.
He voted to keep weapons of war on our streets and in the hands of domestic abusers. He voted to restrict a woman’s right to choose, and to give Big Oil free reign to pollute our environment. He even voted against marriage equality not once, not twice, but three times. He has no right to be anywhere near the levers of power, let alone in Congress.
Josh’s race could decide control of the House, and whether we protect these rights or watch Marc Molinaro and MAGA Republicans continue to strip them away. So if you can, please chip in to support Josh. It’s never been more important. ([link removed])
Thank you,
Jim Obergefell
