Publication Integrity Week | DEIA

Welcome to COPE Digest

We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for COPE’s 2023 "Publication Integrity Week”. This is our opportunity to host a range of virtual discussions and presentations from inspiring speakers for COPE members. If you haven’t registered, we encourage you to take a look at the seminar programme and sign up for sessions that take your interest. On day one (2 October) we look forward to welcoming members to the seminar, which starts with a discussion “Handling a case of misconduct” as panellists voice their perspectives as an editor, a publisher, a university research integrity officer, and a research misconduct body.

For the first time, we are dedicating a day of the seminar programme (3 October) to “Publication misconduct and fraud” when we find out the impact fraud has on publication integrity. Speakers will discuss how we can deal with post-publication corrections, image manipulation, and paper mills. The week continues on day 3 with a panel discussing post-publication critiques, and the week progresses with sessions sharing insight on “Caste and publishing: an ethics gap?” and “Ethical concerns in publishing on urbanisation: perspectives from the Global South” on day 4.

Also on day 4 (5 October) we feature a debate on “AI and peer review” which will explore differing views on this challenging topic. The final day of the seminar (6 October) begins with a discussion on “Inclusive language: policing or progressive?”, and ends with a webinar on the fundamentals of publication integrity as Council members present the ever-popular “Introduction to publication ethics and the COPE Ethics Toolkit” a webinar which is open to members and non-members.

Beyond the seminar, COPE’s Trustee Board and Council extend a warm welcome to Susan Garfinkel ([link removed](SEMINAR-SEPT-2023-DIGEST-NM)) and Mark Hooper ([link removed](SEMINAR-SEPT-2023-DIGEST-NM)) whose knowledge and experience of university and research institute research integrity will be invaluable. Susan, a COPE Trustee, is currently the Associate Vice President for Research Compliance at the Ohio State University, US. Mark Hooper, a Council member, is the Manager of Research Ethics and Integrity at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.

INTRODUCTION TO PUBLICATION ETHICS AND THE COPE ETHICS TOOLKIT
This event, part of the COPE Seminar, is open to all including non-members. It is for new and less experienced editors, with discussion of several cases on different issues, and how to use COPE's resources to prevent and resolve issues.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSIVITY, AND ACCESSIBILITY

In the latest of our COPE Commentaries Alysa Levene brings together the strands of work COPE is undertaking towards creating an inclusive and equitable culture both within COPE and the wider publishing culture.

Alysa covers DEIA training for COPE Council and Trustees, curating inclusive language and thinking for COPE resources, planning of webinars and seminars, and sharing industry learning to make publishing a more equitable space.

ENHANCING PARTNERSHIP OF INSTITUTIONS AND JOURNALS

At our July webinar Sabine Kleinert, Susan Garfinkel and Marie Soulière looked at issues around the relationships between editors/publishers and institutions. Their collaborative approach, from different perspectives, led to recommendations on improving cooperation.

** BEST PRACTICES FOR GUEST EDITED COLLECTIONS
FORUM DISCUSSION

The increase in guest-edited article collections has raised many concerns. These include quality of content, the peer review processes undertaken, the sometimes-indiscriminate marketing to academics, and the susceptibility of these initiatives to organised fraud (such as peer review manipulation, falsified reviews, and lack of oversight regarding ethical matters). These concerns can give the impression that different standards are being applied for regular versus guest-edited content.

Marie Soulière introduced the topic for discussion at the COPE Forum which is available to watch again, with a summary of the discussion.

** PUBLISHER COLLABORATIONS IN ETHICS BREACHES:
FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR

COPE Council Member, Kim Eggleton, will represent COPE and IOPP at this round table discussion at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Hosted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Kim joins speakers from Wiley, IEEE and STM Solutions, to share COPE's thinking on sharing of information regarding breaches of publishing ethics between stakeholders in the scholarly publishing sector.


** CORRECTING PUBLICATIONS

According to Mark Bolland, Alison Avenell, and Andrew Grey, journals that do not withdraw articles when there is ample proof that the study's results are inaccurate may be propagating disinformation. The writers demand a more responsible action for correcting publications.
