FL-27 Newsletter Vol. 118, Issue #32 Dear Friends/Amigos, This week, I was busy in Washington advocating on behalf of the people of Florida's 27th District! Some of FL-27's BIGGEST legislative priorities were brought before Congress this week, including two of my signature bills, the Dignity Act and the Americas Act. See more about how these bills will directly impact the lives of all Miamians below! It is an honor to serve you in Congress, and please continue to call my office or visit my website to share your thoughts with me. As always, I invite you to connect with me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, to get the latest from Washington and from across our district. Sincerely/Atentamente, María Elvira Salazar U.S. Representative (FL-27) I ASKED THE HOUSE WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER MY AMERICAS ACT! This past week, I went before the House Ways and Means Committee to advocate on behalf of my Americas Act! The Americas Act is the America-first trade proposal our country needs to decouple from the Chinese Communist Party's economic agenda. In essence, the Americas Act would expand the historic USMCA trade deal to include nations in the Western Hemisphere who respect the rule of law and fight political corruption. In other words, nations who reflect America's values. By reshoring to our hemisphere, the United States will secure our supply chains and critical industries from Chinese and Russian influence. Since the House Ways and Means Committee directly engages with trade policy, I wanted to voice my support for the bill that will directly impact Miami, the Gateway to the Americas. I SPOKE WITH THE INSPIRATION BEHIND SOUND OF FREEDOM, TIM BALLARD, ABOUT THE DIGNITY ACT'S ANTI-CHILD TRAFFICKING MEASURES This past week, I also got to join my friend and colleague Chairman Chris Smith (R-NJ) of the Human Rights Subcommittee in a hearing examining solutions to end child trafficking in the United States! One of the witnesses at the Committee hearing was Tim Ballard, the anti-child trafficking activist who served as the inspiration for the critically acclaimed film Sound of Freedom! Tim and I got to discuss the anti-child trafficking provisions in my Dignity Act, the comprehensive, bipartisan immigration solution I presented a few months ago. Most cases of child trafficking occurring at our southern border primarily affect children of Latin American origin. This is a shameful development, and must end NOW! I look forward to using Tim as a resource as my colleagues in Congress continue to deliberate on my bill! For my full remarks at the hearing, click HERE. I MET WITH THE GUYANESE PRESIDENT TO DISCUSS SHARED ECONOMIC GOALS WITH MIAMI Lastly, I met earlier this week with President Irfaan Ali of Guyana alongside my colleagues on the House Foreign Affairs Committee! Guyana's economy is expanding rapidly thanks to a new, wholehearted embrace of free markets and rule of law. As a result, Guyana's economy has expanded by 62% just last year, and is forecasted to grow another 32% this year! Guyana is also a critical strategic partner, as the nation serves as the headquarters of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). In this Congress alone, I have sponsored numerous pieces of legislation to expand the United States' economic and strategic relationship in the Caribbean, including the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative Authorization Act and the U.S.-Caribbean Strategic Engagement Act.
