Many Gold Coast businesses are currently dealing with the effects of the precautions in place as a result of Coronavirus. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has activated Australia's emergency response plan [[link removed]?] to contain the outbreak, which has now spread to at least 47 countries.

Thankfully, our strict measures have contained the spread of the virus in Australia, but we can't be complacent. You can keep track of the latest developments via the Department of Health website [[link removed]], and also check Smart Traveller [[link removed]] prior to heading overseas.

I encourage you to do what you can to support local businesses and Aussie tourism operators [[link removed]] as we also recover from the summer of bushfires.

‪It was a privilege to stand up in Parliament and say thank you [[link removed]?] on behalf of the Southern Gold Coast to the incredible men and women on the frontline this bushfire season.

I was also pleased to announce, Queensland company Helitak Fire Fighting Equipment [[link removed]] is among 10 businesses sharing in $3.1 million in Accelerating Commercialisation grants, which will enable them to fit their fire fighting invention to helicopters across the globe.

Plus, work is being carried out at the Australian Space Agency, to ensure we harness technology so we are better prepared for the next bushfire season [[link removed]]. Prime Minister Scott Morrison and I were excited to officially open the Agency's Headquarters in Adelaide [[link removed]?], with the space industry set to generate thousands of jobs of the future.

Technology is also surging forward, with the launch of the new All Technology Index [[link removed]] to ensure the sector grows the economy and creates more Aussie jobs!

Following recent visits to our local schools, I am confident the future of Australia is in good hands. I have been very impressed by a range of initiatives taking place in our community, including Palm Beach-Currumbin State High School [[link removed]?] which has wonderful plans to reduce their waste by 70%; while at both Elanora State School [[link removed]?] and C&K Elanora Community Kindergarten [[link removed]?] they're ensuring our little ones are connecting with nature.

I also visited PBC on a separate occasion with Laura Gerber, to discuss the importance of $556,000 in funding from the Morrison Government to upgrade a notorious pedestrian crossing on Thrower Drive [[link removed]]. It's imperative that our children can go to and from school safely.

Finally, do you know a local STEM Teacher who deserves recognition? Nominations are now open for The Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science [[link removed]], which recognise Australia's outstanding achievers.

Until next month,

Karen Andrews MP
