Hi John -- it’s Jim Joyce, Joanna’s dad.

This is the first time I’m reaching out to Joanna’s supporters, and I am so honored she asked me to do so.

As some of you may know, I was a Naval Flight Officer during the Vietnam War. The military gave me a lot – I relied on veterans’ services to get back on my feet and support my family.

But it wasn’t always smooth sailing. When Joanna was born, I was unemployed. Medicaid helped pay our bills, and we depended on food stamps. I’m not ashamed of needing this help, I – like a lot of Americans – fell on hard times after serving.

That’s why I’m disgusted to see how Republicans continue to play games with our veterans. Instead of honoring the men and women who put their lives on the line to serve our country, they slash funding of government programs our veterans depend on, make it harder for them to feed their families and keep roofs over their heads – the list goes on and on.

For a Party that claims their support of the troops is unrivaled, they don’t blink an eye when they support corporate interests on the backs of veterans. Even now, House Republicans are threatening a government shutdown that would furlough thousands of federal workers and cost the economy billions if they don’t get their extremist policies passed.

It’s absolutely clear Republicans don’t have veterans’ backs, let alone the people of CA-47. That’s why I’m so proud of my daughter, Joanna. I know she’ll take my story and yours to the halls of Congress and fight to protect veterans and all Americans.
