Donald Trump’s repeated claims of a stolen election, despite the absence of evidence and dismissal of numerous lawsuits, ignited a firestorm among his supporters. His inflammatory rhetoric and call to march on the Capitol laid the groundwork for what would become one of the darkest days in American history.
On January 6th, 2021, thousands of Trump supporters gathered in Washington, D.C. What began as a rally soon turned violent as the mob breached the Capitol, threatening the lives of lawmakers and attempting to overturn a fair and democratic election. They caused extensive damage, putting our representatives in hiding, and sending a message of chaos to the world.
It's clear that Trump played a fundamental role in the events leading up to January 6th. The 14th Amendment to our Constitution bars anyone who has "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" against the U.S. from holding elected office. Based on the events of that day and Trump's role in them, he must be disqualified.
We have a duty to protect the integrity of our democracy. Our work so far, including sending over 111,984 messages to officials across the country, is just the beginning. January 6th must serve as a reminder of the fragility of democracy and the importance of holding those responsible accountable.
Such a constant barrage of misinformation created a climate of fear, anger, and confusion. Many of his supporters genuinely believed that their democratic rights had been trampled upon.
When powerful voices manipulate information, the consequences can be dire. We've already seen it firsthand with orchestrated chaos that threatened to unravel democracy. Now, the very instigator of that chaos, Donald Trump, threatens to return to the ballot.
We cannot let that happen. His actions have shown a blatant disregard for our democratic values. We must work tirelessly to ensure that those who've compromised our nation's integrity once don't get the chance to do it again.
