This week, I testified in Congress to bring awareness to an issue that's very personal to me — fixing our broken foster care system.
My mom and I left an abusive home in the middle of the night. We spent time in a domestic violence shelter in San Antonio until we could get back on our feet. My wife has a similar story, she spent time in the foster care system as a child.
My mom now lives with us and enjoys helping us with our six kids, but not everyone's story turns out like ours did. Improving our nation's foster care system is personal to me, and so many others.
Thousands of kids in foster care have gone missing and they can't be located. Our nation's foster youth deserve better care than this. I introduced the Find and Protect Foster Youth Act to remove obstacles authorities face when they are trying to locate a missing foster child.
