John – My name is Shawn Harris. I am a recently-retired United States Army Brigadier General, a grandfather, and a proud son of Georgia – I am a Democrat running for Congress to unseat Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. My opponent is likely the reason you’ve heard of our campaign, but I want to take an opportunity to introduce myself and explain why I am looking to take her on. I was born and raised on my family’s farm in Blakely, Georgia. When I was a child, my father was killed by a drunk driver, leaving my family in grief and threatening our livelihood. In the wake of our tragedy, the community came together to harvest our crops and lift my family up with love, faith, and support. I learned a lot from that experience, lessons that stick with me today – the power of a connected community, the importance of dedicated service, and the significance of giving a hand to those in need. Not only did we successfully harvest that year’s crop, but with the support of friends, family, and strangers, we planted seeds of future prosperity and recovery. I carried these foundational values with me into my career serving the United States in uniform over the last 40 years. Now that I’ve retired from the armed services, I am faced with a choice: do I enjoy my retirement or continue my service to my country in another way, with a run for Congress? I cannot sit by while Congresswoman Greene continues to betray Georgia values and embarrass our country at home and abroad. It is my patriotic duty to continue serving my country, to challenge Ms. Greene to answer for her divisiveness, and to restore dignity to northern Georgia. There are too many reasons to count why northern Georgia needs a change, but I hope in this message I gave you at least one to support me.
