Indivisibles,
Our country is facing numerous challenges -- everything from safeguarding
the economy to defending bodily autonomy -- and Democrats are doing all
they can to address them by working to fully implement the economy-growing
provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act, by advancing the effort to
cancel student loan debt, and by fighting back against right-wing
extremists in court who want to further undermine abortion access.
Republicans are responding to these challenges by...impeaching Joe Biden
for some reason.
Last week, Speaker McCarthy announced that the House of Representatives
would be proceeding with an impeachment inquiry against President Biden
based on vague claims that there are “allegations of abuse of power,
obstruction and corruption.” Is there evidence of any of those things? No,
but this is party of MAGA we’re talking about here. They’ve been
“investigating” the president and his family for 9 months, and they have
absolutely nothing to show for it -- [ [link removed] ]even some of their own reports
have shown that President Biden and his family have done nothing wrong.
If all of this has left your head spinning, or if you’re curious about how
any of this is different from the whole lotta nothing Republicans have
been doing for the last year, here’s a quick explainer:
* The MAGA GOP has been “investigating” Joe Biden and his family since
the start of this Congress, and has yet to uncover anything at all. In
theory, impeachment inquiries are supposed to be based on evidence of
high crimes and misdemeanors, like, say, [ [link removed] ]calling the leader of a
foreign country and trying to bribe him to dig up dirt on your
political opponent, or perhaps something like [ [link removed] ]inciting a deadly
insurrection because you lost a presidential election. There is zero
evidence that Joe Biden has committed any offense that would rise to
this level.
* Moreover, Speaker McCarthy is [ [link removed] ]refusing to take the necessary step
of opening the impeachment inquiry with a floor vote in the House,
primarily because he wants to protect his caucus from having to go on
the record supporting an impeachment inquiry that started out as a
Marjorie Taylor Greene fever dream. Since it’s likely that this
impeachment inquiry lacks any real authority, that means that there
really is no difference between it and the absurd investigations that
the GOP have already been pursuing. In other words, this whole “Biden
impeachment” exists only as a messaging opportunity for MAGA to
elevate conspiracy theories in the media.
Pursuing impeachment isn’t necessarily a surprise -- the same MAGA
representatives in the House who are primarily responsible for handing
Speaker McCarthy his job (like Marjorie Taylor Greene) literally ran on a
promise to impeach President Biden, whether or not they could find a
legitimate justification for doing so.
And guess what? They never did find a legitimate justification, but their
phony impeachment push continues forward.
The MAGA impeachment mind virus has infected even vulnerable Republicans
-- the group we’ve been calling the [ [link removed] ]Unrepresentative 18, House
Republicans who won in districts that had previously gone for Biden in the
2020 election. These vulnerable members should be doing everything they
can to demonstrate to their constituents that they take their jobs
seriously and are working hard to deliver for them. Instead, many of them
are throwing in their lot with the extremist wing of their party to call
for further nonsensical “investigations” of the president.
So why are they doing this? Because they’re still mad that Donald Trump
was impeached, twice, and because [ [link removed] ]Trump himself is demanding that House
Republicans avenge him. Did Joe Biden do anything wrong? No. Is Trump a
big crybaby? Yes. And unfortunately, the latter is all House Republicans
care about.
The only way we can end this absolute clown show is to defeat the MAGA GOP
up and down the ballot next year and take back control of the House. The
adults are ready to get to work and solve the pressing issues we’re facing
-- and it’s time that every Republican, especially the Unrepresentative
18, pay a political price for their disgusting extremism and their refusal
to actually serve the American people. [ [link removed] ]If you can, chip in now and help
us make sure we have all the resources we need to flip these 18 seats and
secure the House.
