Dear Reader,

Most stories we work on involve lots of text — not just the words that end up in the final product you see on our website, but in the emails we send and receive with sources as the story develops and in the documents we comb through. But good journalism isn’t just about the written word. Visuals help share what’s important about a story, create greater context and depth, bring readers into what’s happening or convey the takeaways in a different format. In this video ([link removed]) , PublicSource creative director Natasha Vicens talks about how she pulls from source documents to create visuals with impact.

Most people would agree that the type of camera someone uses has an impact on the images you capture. But, as PublicSource photojournalist Stephanie Strasburg has realized, the impacts of these choices can go far beyond what’s portrayed in the final image. For people who have experienced trauma, being photographed can reawaken or worsen the wounds, and some may not feel safe being photographed at all. In this video ([link removed]) , she explains how a camera’s shutter sound, how she holds it to her face, and the lighting she uses are part of her trauma-informed approach to photojournalism.

While the technologies our team uses are impactful, they are also expensive. We count on gifts from readers like you to make sure we can support our team’s tech needs. Please make a one-time or recurring donation ([link removed]) to our nonprofit newsroom and support our ability to keep doing this work.

Yes, I'll make a gift of support today. ([link removed])
